WHAT IS PILATES

Pilates is name after its creator, Joseph Pilates who formulated the 34 original Pilates matwork moves in the 1920’s. Initially used for dancers and for rehabilitating his own body. Now, with a renewed interest in mind and body exercises and a rise of desk based sedentary jobs, Pilates has become a crucial method of fitness as it engages mind as well as muscle to bring about a feeling of physical and mental wellbeing.

German born Joseph Pilates was a keen sportsman who devised his fitness method at the time of the First World War. After the war he emmigrated to America and set up a studio in New York teaching his exercise programme which quickly attracted sportsmen, actors and dancers.
The Pilates exercise method was brought to Britain in the 1970s but it is really from the 1990s that it has become accessible to all.

It continues to increase in popularity mostly because it’s considered as one of the safest and most effective forms of body conditioning exercise and injury prevention.

5 REASONS

1. Pilates gives you greater strength, length &  muscle tone… read more read less

Pilates movements focus on the lengthening phase of the muscle rather than the shortening phase. This, in turn encourages lean muscle rather than bulk, providing the body with greater mobility but also greater strength. This therefore can prevent injury (as muscles get injured when they are short and tight)

2. Pilates gives you improved flexibility… read more read less

Pilates uses stretching flowing movements to help keep your muscles supple, flexible and have better range of motion. This will in turn allow you to move through daily-life tasks with grace and ease. A flexible muscle is a healthy muscle making it better able to handle the stresses that can cause injury. Increased flexibility means you can do some of your favourite activities like tennis, golf, or playing with your children without the risk of hurting yourself.

3. Pilates gives you better posture… read more read less

Pilates is all about moving efficiently. What makes Pilates so important is that it trains us to develop and use our core muscles (deep muscles of the abdomen and back) rather than holding ourselves with superficial musculature. As we learn to use the deep core muscles of the abdominals, back, and pelvic floor to support our posture, this allows the shoulders to relax, the neck and head to move freely, and relieves stress on the hips, legs, and lower limbs

4. Pilates lowers stress levels… read more read less

The mindful characteristics of Pilates make it an ideal way to remain placid. Pilates exercises provide a successful tool for self-management of the stress. The slow deep lateral thoracic breathing also helps to release built up tension in the body and provide more oxygen and blood flow to parts of the body.

5. Pilates provides relief of back pain and eases joints... read more read less

Pilates seeks to train the body so that all of the core muscles of the deep abdominals work together to support and stabilise the spine. Part of developing an effective core strength is to teach the body to know when to release, as well as when to activate, its core muscles. By strengthening all of your core muscles, this means the muscles of the lower back, shoulders and hips are working less so they are less likely to result in injury. Pilates method is essential for optimal spine and back health

SESSIONS

THE BODYMENTOR PILATES BODY

Wouldn’t you love to change your body? If you practice Pilates techniques already you will know that you can in a subtle, gentle, non invasive way, that results in permanent change.

The aim of Pilates is not to build muscle bulk and stress the body but to perform slow, flowing controlled mindful movements that strengthen and elongate the muscle. These slower paced movements ensure correct body alignment which accentuates muscular harmony and flexibility and strengthens the body teaching awareness of breath and spinal alignment. Quality over quantity is the key.

1 TO 1 BODYMENTOR PILATES

1-to-1 sessions are multi-level to suit all fitness levels and all ages. Clients are encouraged to work at the level most appropriate to their current ability with modifications and progressions being offered as appropriate, allowing for the potential to progress as you train.

A session will typically begin with gentle standing work to focus and prepare the body. A series of toning exercises are then performed on the mat lying on the back, side and front or whilst seated.  Small equipment such as soft balls, resistance bands and foam rollers may be used during class to introduce added assistance or challenge.

My approach is that the Pilates session should be dynamic, varied but attainable, keeping participants motivated and inspired. Clients generally leave feeling energised yet relaxed, lengthened and possibly a little bit taller!

1 TO 1 CORRECTIVE EXERCISE TRAINING

Corrective exercise training is a personal training session that uses the techniques and ethos of Pilates and applies them to a personal training session. Therefore it is not just a matwork Pilates session but we use weights, cables and other equipment as well as functional  and dynamic moves such as lunges and squats.

It is about training the body to be in balance. It’s a mix of Pilates and a personal training session.

CLIENT TESTIMONIALS

Tracey has systematically devised a series of exercises that have dramatically improved my posture and strength. she inspires confidence… Her dedication to improving my well being has shone through. This really is a vocation to her. I swear I am taller at the end of her sessions

‘Tracey has been incredible for me. Before I started seeing Tracey, I was in agony with a herniated disc, degeneration of the spine and chronic pain. To date I have tried acupuncture, osteopathy, reflexology, taken a plethora of supplements and also used a tens machine. None of these have had any lasting improvement, up to the point where I have been offered spinal fusion of my lower back in an attempt to alleviate my pain.

Having Tracey as my dedicated one to one tutor, has been invaluable. Her focused, calm approach and the reassurance of her anatomical knowledge is second to none. After seeing her on a weekly basis for a few months I started to notice real progress. I have now been seeing her for over a year and I have had a massive improvement.

I strongly recommend Tracy to anyone with similar conditions.
